  11. I've had a rather troublesome error that keeps haunting me during most 
  12. attempts to install NetBSD/amiga 1.1. I have the FAQs, and I can't seem to 
  13. find any info on this problem...

  15. Problem: In all but 2 times when installing NetBSD, the system halts with 
  16. a "panic: Bus error" message. This error comes up shortly after I start 
  17. the installation process with the "loadbsd -A -I ff -b netbsd" command 
  18. from AmigaDOS. The system recognizes my harddisks, etc. At the point when 
  19. the install program should ask me for the root device, the computer hangs 
  20. with that error. However, I have gotten past this bus error only 2 times. 
  21. During both times, I installed the system to the point where i had to 
  22. configure the system with the "Configure" command. After configuring the 
  23. system and copying the kernel from the miniroot filesystem, the 
  24. installation notes say that the system should be halted and restarted with 
  25. the "loadbsd netbsd" command. When I tried to restart the system, it again 
  26. hung with a "panic: Bus error" message. (In all instances, after the error 
  27. message, the system locks up after issuing a "syncing disks..." message.)

  29. I can't figure out what I did differently those 2 times to make the system 
  30. at least install to the point where I could actually do anything at the sh 
  31. prompt. Either way, the error still comes back on the second startup. I'm 
  32. almost positive I have the harddisk formatted/partitioned correctly, since 
  33. I checked them multiple times, and I've done complete install preparations 
  34. many times.

  38.     Amiga 4000/040, 18M ram, revision 11 Buster
  39.     Cybervision 64, 4M
  40.     Fastlane Z3 SCSI controller
  41.     MultiFace 3 serial/parallel card
  42.  
  43. I'm using the default install kernel that was from the original 1.1 
  44. release (that is, i'm not using a CV fix 1 or 2, or the CV console 
  45. kernel). Also, the harddisk that I'm installing to is a 1.2G IDE drive, 
  46. so I can't be running into a problem with the Fastlane Z3 SCSI controller. 
  47. My partitions are all on the same drive, and the sizes are as follows:

  50.     usr  : 1024M
  51.     swap : 60M
  52.     local: 102M

  54. If anyone can suggest a remedy for this problem, I'd be grateful...
